How to Make Cosmetic Results Last Longer With Teeth Whitening Trays

Teeth whitening trays are used during professional whitening treatments and with at-home teeth bleaching kits. These treatments use bleaching agents like hydrogen carbamide and hydrogen peroxide to oxidize stains from teeth surfaces and their inner layers.

Teeth whitening is one of the most economical ways to drastically improve the appearance of your teeth. Professional whitening treatments can make teeth eight shades whiter, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Making the results of teeth whitening treatments last with whitening trays

Unfortunately, teeth do not remain stain-free forever after whitening teeth. Many of the foods and beverages that most people consume, like coffee, can stain teeth, and so can habits like smoking. Dentists can provide patients with at-home whitening kits to help maintain the results of their whitening treatment.

At-home whitening kits do not have highly concentrated bleaching agents, as is the case with professional whitening treatments, so they can be safely used at home. These whitening kits will make teeth just as white as professional whitening treatments can in about three weeks.

These whitening kits come with mouth trays that are custom made from an impression of the patient's teeth. The same mouth tray can be used for the patient's in-office treatments.

New stains and discoloration will eventually form on a person's teeth, and at-home whitening kits are an effective way to get rid of them. These kits should be used whenever new stains are starting to affect the way that a person's teeth look. Most at-home whitening kits can be safely used for up to 21 consecutive days.

Other things that help keep teeth looking pearly white include:

  • Rinsing the mouth immediately after meals or beverages
  • Avoiding tobacco products
  • Drinking water
  • Avoiding tannin-rich foods/beverages, like tea or pasta sauce
  • Consuming foods that promote healthy teeth, like apples and leafy vegetables
  • Using a straw when drinking beverages that can stain teeth
  • Using a whitening toothpaste to brush once or twice per week
  • Brushing twice daily and flossing once

How a dentist helps

Regular visits to a dentist can also help you maintain the results of your teeth whitening treatments. Dentists perform teeth cleanings during these visits, and that helps remove tartar and surface stains. Tartar makes teeth appear yellow and picks up stains easier than teeth surfaces. Removing tartar makes teeth look brighter and increases the effectiveness of teeth whitening treatments.

Dentists can also perform professional teeth whitening when there are enough new stains to warrant it. Many of those who get whitening treatments maintain the color of their teeth by getting them professionally whitened once per year.

Most importantly, a dentist can verify if a patient's teeth are healthy enough for teeth whitening. Bleaching damaged teeth can lead to severe pain and permanent damage to teeth structures.
