3 Different Types of Restorative Dentistry Procedures

Restorative dentistry is a popular branch of dentistry focused on diagnosing and treating problems with the teeth and gums as well as the appearance of the teeth. Even though some of the procedures performed are similar to cosmetic dentistry procedures, restorative dentists also provide a lot of treatments that cosmetic dentists do not, especially treatments that require surgery.

Three different restorative dentistry procedures you might need

Some of the most common restorative dentistry procedures include:

1. Tooth filling

This procedure involves the dentist removing decay from the tooth and filling up the hole with a variety of materials, ranging from porcelain to silver or gold. Dentists also use tooth fillings to repair broken or cracked teeth if the hole is not too big. If the dentist believes that the tooth will not be able to hold the dental filling, they will recommend using a dental crown to hold it together.

Once the dentist has determined that the tooth needs a filling, they will use a drill, abrasion instrument or laser to remove the decayed parts of the tooth. Once the decay has been removed, the dentist will clean out the remainder of the tooth to remove debris and bacteria. After the tooth has been cleaned, the dental filling is applied to the affected area to close the hole and restore the remaining tooth.

2. Dental crowns

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are placed and cemented over a tooth to protect it from damage and infection. They can be used to restore the size and shape of a tooth while improving its appearance.

These are some of the situations in which a dentist will recommend using a dental crown:

  • To cover and support a damaged tooth
  • To protect a weak tooth from decay
  • To cover a discolored tooth
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To hold a bridge in place

Dental crowns are made from different materials, including metals, ceramics, stainless steel, porcelain and composite resin. The metals are used on the teeth in the back of the mouth to reduce their visibility, the ceramics and porcelain are used on the visible teeth because they can be color matched to the patient’s natural teeth, while the stainless steel crowns are used temporarily until the permanent crown is ready.

3. Dental implants

These are very popular when it comes to replacing missing teeth. The procedure requires the fusing of titanium posts to the jaw with an artificial tooth screwed to the top of it. Implants are considered the closest thing to natural teeth because the titanium posts act as tooth roots and stimulate bone growth, while dentures and dental bridges do not.

The implants improve the appearance of the patient’s teeth and also restore functionality, allowing them to speak and chew their food without problems.

Conclusion

Restorative dentistry is a very useful practice because it combines various dental practices to improve the health and appearance of your teeth. If you are thinking of improving the way your teeth look, talk to your dentist about undergoing restorative dentistry.
